How to Avoid Scars After Your Rhinoplasty Surgery

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a significant procedure that can dramatically alter your appearance. However, proper post-operative care is crucial to ensure the best results and minimize scarring. Here are some expert tips to guide you through the healing process after your rhinoplasty surgery. Remember, always consult with your surgeon before following any advice!

The Critical First Two Weeks

The initial fortnight post-surgery is vital for your recovery. To keep the incision clean and reduce the risk of infection, which can lead to scarring, follow these steps:

  • Twice-Daily Cleaning: Gently clean the incision area with hydrogen peroxide. This helps to prevent infection and aids in the healing process.
  • Antibiotic Ointment: Apply an antibiotic ointment after cleaning. Avoid Neosporin as it might cause irritation. I typically recommend Bacitracin, Bactroban, or Mupirocin to my patients.
  • Avoid Picking: It’s crucial not to pick at any crusting that forms at the incision site.
  • Sun Exposure: Protect your nose from both direct and indirect sunlight. Sun exposure can worsen scarring.

Weeks Three and Four – Transitioning Care

As you move into the third and fourth weeks, your care routine will change slightly:

  • Discontinue Hydrogen Peroxide and Antibiotic Ointment: It’s usually safe to stop using these after the first two weeks.
  • Moisturize: Start applying Aquaphor or Vaseline to keep the area moist, which aids in healing.
  • Skincare and Makeup: You may start using makeup and other skincare products, but this is determined on an individual basis.
  • Sun Protection: Continue to shield your nose from the sun to prevent scarring.

Week Five and Beyond – Long-term Care

From the fifth week onwards, your focus will shift to long-term care:

  • Itchiness and Dryness: These sensations typically indicate healing. Continue using Aquaphor or Vaseline for moisture.
  • Scar Treatment: Begin a medical-grade topical scar treatment to reduce the visibility of any scars.
  • Sunscreen Is a Must: Protecting your skin from the sun is essential. Not only does it prevent scars from worsening, but it also keeps your skin healthy.
  • Consult Before Using Exfoliators or Retinol: Talk to your surgeon before starting any harsh skin treatments, such as exfoliators or retinol products like Accutane.
