The weeks leading up to your rhinoplasty are just as important as the recovery period. Being prepared reduces stress and sets the stage for a smooth operation and healing process.
Use this checklist to get organized before your surgery date.
2 Weeks Before: The “Stop” List
Certain medications and habits can interfere with anesthesia or blood clotting.
-
Stop Smoking: Nicotine constricts blood vessels and can cause skin death (necrosis) or poor scarring. You must stop at least 2 weeks before and after surgery.
-
Avoid Blood Thinners: Stop taking Aspirin, Ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin), Vitamin E, and fish oil supplements, as these increase bleeding. Stick to Tylenol for pain.
1 Week Before: The “Shop” List
Stock up on supplies so you don’t have to run errands while swollen.
-
Pharmacy: Pick up your prescriptions, saline nasal spray, and Arnica Montana (for bruising).
-
Comfort: Buy a neck pillow (like for travel) and lip balm (your mouth will get dry from breathing through it).
-
Food: Stock your fridge with soft, easy-to-eat foods and hydration drinks (water, Gatorade).
The Day Before: The “Set Up” List
Create a recovery nest in your bedroom or living room.
-
Clean the House: Fresh sheets and a clean environment reduce the risk of infection.
-
Arrange Transport: You cannot drive yourself home after anesthesia. Confirm your ride and have someone stay with you for the first 24 hours.
-
Entertainment: Download movies, audiobooks, or podcasts. You will be resting a lot, and reading might be difficult if your eyes are swollen.
